Q:hey, very random i came across your tumblr. typed shanghai d'angelo soul into google and you're pretty much there! I'm Liselotte, swedish singer travelling australia for 4 months, and now going back to sweden with a 10 day stop in shanghai. looks like shanghai has quite a decent hiphop/neo-soul scene which i would be delighted to explore. any favourite venues to reccomend? lots of live music going on also? Hey I hope I’m not responding to this too late, but yes, Shanghai has a solid scene for genuine Hip Hop and Jazz. Unfortunately it’s sort of underground, but my main recommendations would be “The Shelter” and “DADA’s”. For me, the shelter is the best. Keep us posted and Wino and I will come and support you!
Fun times with Xu Laoshi
- Xu Laoshi: 你们去过泰国吗?
- Xu Laoshi: 泰国有很漂亮的奴人.
- Xu Laoshi: 不是奴人!
- Xu Laoshi: 都是男人!
- Xu Laoshi: Have you all been to Thailand?
- Xu Laoshi: Thailand has very beautiful women.
- Xu Laoshi: They aren't women!
- Xu Laoshi: They're all men!!!
- Me: -dies laughing-
Never waste your time trying to explain who you are to people who are committed to misunderstanding you.

Many updates coming soon.
But first?
Midterms.
At the Half-Way point.
And feeling pretty good. Naturally, I still have a lot I want to learn, but after sitting down and really reflecting, I’ve seriously come a long way guys. I can really have good and full conversations in Chinese. I think I’ve said this before, but It’s gotten to the point where I can remember certain conversations with people, and realizing later that these people are unable to speak English, and that I was speaking to them fully in Chinese. I’ve had conversations with people who say that they, at one point, began to think in the language they were studying. I’m not quite there yet, but with certain words and expressions I am. And it’s encouraging to know that this is only the half way point, and I have another two months to fill in the gaps in my knowledge.
Any time I have a conversation with a person and I don’t have the words I want, or I can’t understand them as fully as I want to, it motivates me a little more. Also, I need to leave Shanghai fully able to hold my own in the Morehouse Chinese program, because while Charlie came into Morehouse fluent, there is another student, Myles, who entered the same time as me. We became very good friends during our time in 201 and 202, is currently in Taiwan. Before, he and I were both the A students in our class, but while I’ll be returning to Morehouse this Fall with a semester of application under my belt, he will be returning with a full year yall. So there’s a bit of a rivalry there, and although the numerical odds are against me, it wouldn’t be the first time.
That’s all I’ve got. Sorry for the typos, it’s late lol.
Just to let you guys know, regarding my pictures:

“The Ambush” from BeiBei and Shawn Lee’s album. The soundtrack for my life here in China basically consists of BeiBei and Shawn Lee, Blue Swing, and Indigo Jam unit.
Miss BeiBei plays my favorite Chinese traditional instrument, the guzheng, and combined with blues and jazz elements, it makes for a very original sound. Sometimes I feel like I’m in a modern Jim Kelly flick.
Enjoy.
